Hey Tom,

My interest in bringing the whole issue up has as much to do with how and when the change happened as what the change became. I guess I could do the research myself, but I wondered if anyone knew already. Like, was there a campus-wide debate, was it done by presidential fiat, did the athletic department do it in the dead of night (like the Colts moving to Indianapolis) or what?

As I said, I'm an Ole and not unhappy about that (although I think being a lion is more romantic), I'm just curious about the way it all came about.

I disagree. There are no other sport teams in the world with the name "Oles". In fact many of the teams in the MIAC (Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) have these types of monikers. Johnnies, Tommies, and Carls. I think it's one of the cooler traditions the MIAC has. Granted colleges like Carelton has the Knights as their official mascot, and Carls is a much more informal. I think the idea that the name is "Oles" is pretty interesting.

As for Jerry's comment, if the other option was the St. Olaf Axe Wielding Lions, then I might be on board for the change.

As of now, I am glad that I am an Ole and not just a plain old Lion.

Again, another great suggestion.
I will attempt to forward this to community development and see if we have a sign ordinance or who handle this.

Next let's see if we can work on a welcome to Northfield sign.

The EDA has two primary goals and yes, new development options allowing companies in Northfield to expand is one option under consideration. The EDA Land committee has been working on this for several years. Infill and addressing current properties are also another priority.
The "no brainer" is finding the right tenants and also having access to current vacant buildings as well as a price that is comparable to what a bank is willing to lend or determine it's value at.
Hope this helps.

In regards to your glass of "economic brew", remember that the glass is neither half full nor half empty. It simply has a capacity to hold more "brew" than it presently contains. Lets hope for ways of getting more "brew" into the glass and not be pouring it out of the glass.

I am so excited to hear your "Thanksgiving" perspective.
Both the College City site and Coach Crafters on your "left us " list, will soon have new tenants that will not only add jobs but create new ones. The investment in Northfield continues and we all should focus on the positive.

I am also excited and proud to say as Chris did from College City. It is Dundas and NOT DALLAS.
My staff and many from the Northfield location still live and work in or near Northfield.

Again...thanks for noticing the good things!

When I was at St. Olaf in the mid 80s the teams were called "Oles." A small group of students led a valiant effort to reinstate the "Lions" moniker, but it never really caught on with the masses.
